Brandon Tate-Brown was killed by police in Philadelphia in the early morning hours of December 15, 2014. His death has drawn attention as Philadelphians have connected the killing with the larger Black Lives Matter movement, which begun during protests over the killing of Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO. His mother, Tanya Dickerson (also known as Tanya Brown) has been speaking at public events since his death, including at an MLK Day rally in Philadelphia. Police say that Tate-Brown was stopped because the vehicle he was driving did not have headlights, and that they could see a gun in the center console of his car. Tate-Brown was not holding the gun when he got out of his car, though police claim he was trying to back into the car to get the gun when he was shot. He was shot in the back of the head. Tate-Brown had been in prison for five years after pleading guilty to aggravated assault in 2007 and was released in 2012, having earned a GED while in prison. His mother, Tanya Dickerson, says that the assault occurred when Brandon defended his then-girlfriend, who was being beaten by another man. He was working at Hertz car rental at the time of his death. The names of the officers who stopped Tate-Brown's car have not been released. Ms. Dickerson has called for more information about the circumstances of her son's death.
