Bob Frutos

Bob Frutos is an American politician and former law enforcement officer serving as the mayor of Burbank, California. Elected in December 2020, he succeeded Sharon Springer. The retired police officer previously served as mayor from 2015 to 2016. His current term on the Burbank City Council runs through December 2022.
Early life and education
Frutos was born in Lincoln Heights, California and his family later moved to West Los Angeles, California. Growing up, he was active in the Boy Scouts and in the local police explorer program. He graduated from University High School and later attended West Los Angeles College in Ladera Heights, California, where he studied police science.
Career
Prior to entering politics, Frutos served on the Los Angeles Police Department. He joined the LAPD in 1986 and served more than 25 years on the force before retirement. He worked in various divisions of the force, including narcotics, patrol, community relations, detectives, hazardous devices and homeland security. He also was assigned to be Youth Services Officer in South Central Los Angeles, supervising the Explorer Scout Program.
Politics
Frutos was first elected to the Burbank City Council in 2013. Frutos ran on a campaign of neighborhood empowerment, community engagement, and bringing a fresh perspective to local government. Prior to his election, he was appointed to the Burbank Police Commission and served as its chairman for three years.
While on the City Council, Frutos has served as mayor and vice mayor. Frutos also served as council liaison to the Burbank Airport Ad Hoc Committee, Audit Committee, Public Information Office Advisory Committee, Racial Equity and Diversity Subcommittee, Board of Library Trustees, Infrastructure Oversight Board, Sustainable Burbank Commission and the Burbank Board of Realtors.
As vice mayor in 2014, he made a splash by creating the city's first-ever “Rock-a-Hula” pool party for the city’s 55-and-older crowd. The pool party became an annual tradition in the city until the coronavirus pandemic.
After getting elected to a second term as mayor in December 2020, Frutos recognized the gravity of the situation facing the city and its leaders. "I know the road ahead of us will be the most difficult in modern history to serve on any council,” Frutos said in remarks during the Council meeting. "Like so many other cities across our nation, we’re just beginning to see the economic devastation of a sort that we really haven’t seen since the Great Depression. Our top priority will be maintaining the fiscal health of our city and to continue to work on the economic recovery of our city."
Personal life
Frutos and his wife, Laura, have resided in Burbank, California for nearly 30 years.
