Bloomsday Rising is a Southern-influenced rock band based in San Francisco, California. The band's name is derived from the Leopold Bloom character in James Joyce's novel Ulysses. They released their first, self-produced album Rattle the Windows in December of 2007. The album was mastered at Prairie Sun recording studios in Cotati, CA with the sound engineer and producer Oz Fritz, who won acclaim for his work with Tom Waits' Grammy-winning album, Mule Variations.
Biography The band consists of Phil Lang (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Chris Hansen (bass, vocals), Fernando Estrada (lead guitar, vocals), and Kiernan Rien (drums). Lang and Hansen met in 2005 while both were attending the MFA program at the University of San Francisco. Lang grew up in Minnesota and Hansen was raised in Nebraska and Denver. Estrada, who grew up in Guatemala, subsequently joined the duo after meeting Hansen in the University of San Francisco MBA program. Rien, originally from Oakdale, California, joined the group as an undergraduate, also at the University of San Francisco.
The band played at SF Weekly's 2008 Artopia event in San Francisco, which celebrated the Masterminds art competition. Both Lang and Hansen were Masterminds finalists in the literary category.
