Blog Workers Industrial Union and Benevolent Society

Blog Workers Industrial Union and Benevolent Society (BWIUBS) is a multifaceted Progressive grassroots organization. The group is known for performing volunteer work for Democratic candidates as well as causes and ballot initiatives. The organization is very informal, using Facebook groups, Twitter, Google tools, and DailyKos as its means of organizing and communicating.
Volunteer Bank & Mentor Bank
Early BWIUBS organizer Spedwybabs had worked as a campaign staffer at the Federal House level and knew much of what campaigns might actually be able to receive from a pool of skilled virtual workers. The Volunteer Bank is a list of union members who are available to campaigns to perform various tasks, typically information handling or messaging related work, particularly helping campaigns unfamiliar with netroots culture navigate the Progressive blogosphere. Recognizing the value this group brought to grassroots efforts, a number of campaign staff agreed to form a mentoring group, helping to guide both the volunteers and new campaign staff.

History
BWIUBS was founded on August 16th, 2009 at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, PA and began as a prank on conservative media figures, with the intent to create the appearance of a labor dispute between liberal bloggers and George Soros . The organization's name was coined by civil liberties activist Ben Masel , the only minor to make the Nixon White House enemies list.
The December 2nd announcement entitled Blog Workers Industrial Union Gets Serious marked a reduction in snark and an increased focus on volunteerism, economic development for members, and growing influence.
Blog Workers Industrial Union and Benevolent Society rapidly progressed, growing a volunteer social media operators pool for political campaigns and ballot initiatives, creating a for profit social media consulting company, assisting in the creation of a transparent microcontribution driven political action committee, and in general working to create more infrastructure for a Progressive Democratic machine.
Logo
The logo holds much symbolism for both Blog Workers Industrial Union and Benevolent Society as well as insiders from Daily Kos. The typewriter together with the organization's name evoke days gone by, when American labor made America strong and journalistic integrity was intact. The steaming coffee cup represents the group's attempt to break down the hyper-individualism afflicting America today, encouraging citizens to re-engage in the political process. The pie is an inside joke from Daily Kos, where disputes are described as pie fights, and it represents the members' willingness to engage in vigorous debate if required. Loki, the cat lounging on the keyboard, belongs to a Kossack and appears regularly in the steady flow of 'pootie diaries' filled with LOL cats that appear on the site.
