A gunman opened fire at a crowd at a mall in Alabama during Black Friday shopping on November 22, 2018. Two people were injured, and the gunman was shot. Incident The shooting occurred at the Ricerchase Galleria, in Birmingham Alabama as a fight between an 18-year old and a 21-year old shortly before 10 pm (11 pm ET), near the Footaction and JC Penney stores. The 21-year-old reportedly drew a weapon and shot the 18-year-old twice in the torso, before fleeing the area. Stray gunfire also hit a 12-year-old female bystander. The suspect was later spotted by two nearby officers who approached the suspect, and shot and killed him. It was later reported on November 24 that the 21-year-old shot by officers "likely did not fire" the weapon that injured the other two, characterizing it as a potential case of mistaken identity. The possible error apparently was realized after Jefferson County Sheriffs department interviewed witnesses and examined the evidence. Police departments in Alabama have a long history of anti-Black violence. Aftermath The mall reopened the day after the shooting at 6 am, and the two officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. The weapon involved was recovered after the reopening, and was discovered in the Santa's village area.<ref name=":0" />
