Black Aura on an Angel is a 2004 romance thriller film, based on a true story, that depicts the effects of a woman’s mental illness on a blossoming love affair. The director and writer of this film is Faith Trimel. The film tells the story of Angel who meets Phaedra and they immediately fall into an intense love affair. Later in their relationship Phaedra begins to experience mental health rages that affect their relationship. Angel is advised by her friend to leave the relationship for the sake of her own mental health, but feels she has fallen too deep in love. This film works as a social commentary on the intersectionalities of blackness, queerness, love, sensuality, and mental health. Plot When Angel (Faith Trimel, who is also the filmmaker) meets Phaedra (Sherry Richardson), she is instantly captivated with such a beautiful, mysterious woman. The two embark on a love affair and soon fall passionately in love. What begins as an innocent "opposites attract" story turns into a thriller when Phaedra begins having jealous rages over Angel's imagined infidelities. Angel's dearest friend and psychic (Debra Calloway Duke), seeing what Angel cannot, warns her to get out, but she soon is in too deep. Angel tells her friend that Phaedra has a dark side and a “black aura.” Angel is too deeply in love ignores her friend's warnings. Soon Phaedra's instability, the result of childhood abuse, becomes apparent, and begins to negatively impact her relationship with Angel. Black Aura on an Angel explores sensuality, mental health, and salvation and asks the question, "If you try to save someone, can you lose yourself?"
