Bill Goodwyn

Bill Goodwyn is a senior media and ed-tech executive, recognized as one of the top 10 innovators in education by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), with over 30 years of experience in building and leading high-performance organizations that disrupt existing markets and create long-cycle stakeholder and shareholder value.
Early life and education
Goodwyn was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Irene and Art, a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. As a result of his father’s military career, he moved numerous times throughout his childhood, including to Tripoli, Libya.
Goodwyn graduated from Tarboro High School in 1978 and went on to attend the University of North Carolina. Goodwyn graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and communication.
Career
Goodwyn was recruited in 1983 to Scripps Howard Company, where he was responsible for the distribution of the cable industry's first electronic program guide, TV Watch.
Goodwyn then joined Landover, MD based Discovery Communications in 1987 as one of the company’s first distribution executives.
Goodwyn progressed through the organization, ultimately serving as both President of Global Content Distribution and also CEO of Discovery Education, where he was responsible for the distribution of a portfolio of high-definition, video on demand, mobile and digital services in 180 countries, generating $1.5B annually. Discovery Channel became the fastest growing network in television history and subsequently lead distribution for other cable networks, including: The Learning Channel (TLC); Animal Planet; Science Channel; and one of the largest television platforms, consisting of 13 U.S. Television Networks and $3.0 billion annual revenue.
Goodwyn pioneered the development of digital textbooks to replace hardcopy textbooks as the primary resource for classroom instruction. In 2013, Goodwyn led the acquisition of UK market education leader Espresso delivery digital content to primary and secondary schools across the United Kingdom.
Awards
Goodwyn recently received the 2017-2018 AdvancED Global Excellence in Education Award for leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education around the world. Goodwyn was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2013 , the Cable Center's Cable TV Pioneers has been awarded the National Cable & Telecommunications Association's Vanguard Award, the highest honor for Young Leadership. He is also a recipient of the Next Generation Leadership Award from the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication recognizing individuals who represent the next generation of leadership in their fields. Goodwyn has received recognition from the NC Media Journalism and Hall of Fame and is annually recognized in The Cablefax 100 list recognizing influential cable executives.
Boards and other affiliations
Goodwyn serves on the UNC Chapel Hill Chancellors Philanthropic Council, the T. Howard Foundation, the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) CEO Members, the CTAM Educational Foundation the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Foundation Board, the UNC-Chapel Hill Journalism and Communications School Board of Advisors, and is on the advisory board for EdWeek Market Brief.
Goodwyn previously served on the boards of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and the Alexander Youth Network, and he is formerly a trustee for the Committee for Economic Development (CED).
