Big Four strategic communications firms

Similar to the "Big Four" accounting firms and the "Magic Circle" law firms, a group of elite corporate advisory and public relations firms has emerged as the global leaders and go-to advisors for major corporations. These firms, often referred to as the "Big Four" of strategic communications, include Brunswick, FGS Global, FTI Consulting, and Teneo.
These firms are known for their expertise in corporate, financial, and public affairs advisory, offering a comprehensive suite of services that span from crisis management and litigation support to public and government affairs, geopolitical risk analysis and corporate restructuring. Their ability to guide C-suites and boardrooms through high-stakes situations has made them indispensable to companies navigating the challenges of today's business environment.
The distinction between traditional public relations and strategic communications has blurred, with the latter increasingly viewed as a branch of management consultancy. Firms like Brunswick, FGS Global, FTI Consulting, and Teneo are valued not only for their PR expertise but also for their ability to provide holistic advisory services that address a broad spectrum of business challenges.
The significance of PR in corporate strategy is reflected in the growing demand for specialized advisory services. According to industry reports, the global public relations market was valued at approximately $88 billion in 2020 and is expected to continue growing, driven by the increasing importance of brand reputation and the rise of digital communication channels.
The deal struck by KKR in August 2024 to acquire 50% of FGS global for 775m highlighted the "McKinsey-style rating" underscoring the growing recognition of strategic communications as a high-value service comparable to management consulting. This shift in perception is reflected in the rising valuations of these firms, which are increasingly seen as essential partners in corporate governance and risk management.
