The first pop a point pencil was patented by the founder of Bensia Pioneer Industrial Corporation in the early 70's. Bensia products are manufactured in Taiwan, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
Pop a Point Pencils
Bensia is a Taiwanese word (pronounced "Bensha" in Taiwanese) meaning "no need to sharpen". Hence the derivative name "non-sharpening pencil". Pioneered by Bensia Corporation, also known as Bensia pencil or non-sharpening pencil is a type of pencil with a plastic holder that houses many cartridges of sharp lead tips. When the sharp tip becomes dull, the cartridge of the dull tip can be pulled out and re-inserted to the top of the plastic holder which causes the next cartridge to appear at the writing end. In the late 60's and early 70's, mechanical pencils did not exist and wooden pencils were sharpened with a pencil sharpener or a knife. The idea behind Bensia pencil is to remove the necessity to sharpen wooden pencils with pencil sharpeners. Due to its conveniency and lightweight, pop a point pencils gained popularity among children in the 80's and they are still used today.
Pop a Point Variations
Modern variations of the pop a point model include pop a point erasers, pop a point colour pencils, and pop a point crayons. They are also based on the same mechanism of pop a point pencils.
