History
The Bay East Association of Realtors, first known as the Southern Alameda County Real Estate Board, was formed in September 1947 by 22 real estate brokers and was located at 784 Commercial Street, Hayward in a dusty loft over a feed store. The first President was John A. Deadrich. In 1949 the Board had grown to 74. The Board accepted the first reciprocal agreement proposed by the Berkeley Board; developed a campaign to educate the public in the use of the term "Realtors", and took part in the “Open Sign Clean-Up” campaign, earning the National Award given for “outstanding achievement in rendering great public service to their community and promoting good will for their Board and thereby for realtors everywhere.”
Four name changes and 5 locations later, the Bay East Association of Realtors has 5000 members and covers the cities of: San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward, Castro Valley, Union City, Newark, Fremont, Pleasanton, Livermore and Sunol. Grew rapidly in the first part of the decade and peaked at 6,400 in 2007, but has since declined with the housing slump.
