Backwell Karate

Backwell Karate is a Shotokan Karate school in Backwell, North Somerset. History Backwell Karate, previously known as Backwell Shotokan Karate Club, was founded in 1978 by Bryan Gideon and Bob Padfield, on the invitation of two teachers at Backwell Secondary School. Established in Backwell School Theatre, the club later moved to the gymnasium at the School, which offered a more appropriate, sprung wooden floor. In 1997, the club moved to Backwell Parish Hall, where it currently resides. As well as Sensei Bryan Gideon, regular instructors at the club have included Sensei Guy March, Sensei Richard Hill, Sensei Tim Griffiths and Sensei Chris Denny. In 2010, after over 30 years of Sensei Bryan Gideon running the club, national squad member, Sensei Tim Griffiths, became the club’s Chief Instructor. Sensei Gideon still plays an active role as a teacher at the club that he started. The club has been a member of the Karate Union of Great Britain throughout its history.
