The Australian Mafia is one of the results of the Australian version of a worldwide phenomenon that started in the late 19th century with the mass emigration of Sicilian and Calabrian emigrants to various regions of the globe (Italian Diaspora). The settling of Italian communities in Australia greatly helped develop the Mafia's roots in the country. Some of the most powerful criminal organizations in Australia a product of this phenomenon that lasts still today. Unlike the American Mafia the Australian offshoot remained rural like it's Sicilian counterpart. It started extorting farmers in Queensland, controlling the production and sale of fruit, vegetables and fertilizer, and contraband schemes. The organization has only started urbanizing itself in recent decades.
