Amiee Shelton

Amiee Shelton (1971) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Roger Williams University. She teaches public relations, and advises the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter. Shelton was awarded the Mark Gould Excellence in Teaching award in 2010 by the Roger Willams University student body and administration. Shelton's name is engraved on a plaque listing past recipients of each award in the Mary Tefft White Cultural Center in the University Library. She has also been nominated the last two years for Excellence in Teaching Award by the faculty of Roger Williams University. As adviser to PRSSA, she has led the chapter to national prominence illustrated by placing third in the nation in the Bateman Case Study Competition sponsored by PRSA for a PR campaign for the 2010 U.S. Census in 2010. Her teams have previously been awarded honorable mention (2006, 2008, 2009) and Second place (2005). These awards correspond to the years Shelton has been involved in the Bateman Competition. Her students also presented at the PRSSA National Conference in 2009. Prior to RWU she taught at Texas Tech University, Texas State University (formally Southwest Texas University), and the University of Texas at San Antonio where she was involved with various non-profit organizations, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Boysville. Under her guidance, her students have raised money for a variety of causes, most notably the Newport R.I Schools, Fisher House Foundation, and Homes For Our Troops.
Additionally, Shelton has presented several papers at academic conferences including: International Management
Development Association, American Society for Competitiveness(ASC), International Academy of Business Disciplines, and the Eastern Communication Association. She is also often invited as an invited speaker, at venues such as the Academy of Management in Lodz Poland, The European Union Student Management Conference, and an invited panel member for conferences. She has also been interviewed in numerous news stories concerning PR issues, and invited to sit on various panels and boards dealing with public relations.
Shelton was awarded the Silver Spur Award honoring outstanding professional achievement in developing and implementing significant public relations programs or projects from the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA). She has been nominated for five teaching awards, and has been voted Professor and Adviser of the month numerous times. She taught former NBA star Bruce Bowen at the University of Texas- San Antonio in 2003. She and Bowen received local and national new coverage as Bowen was scheduled to take her final exam during his final game against the L.A. Lakers for the 2003 Division Championship.
Prior to working as a college professor, she worked in television. She was a reporter, assignment manager, promotions assistant or producer for the following stations: WPRI (CBS) providence, WXIN (FOX) Indianapolis, WQAD-TV (ABC) Moline, WOI-TV (ABC) Des Moines, KEVN (FOX) Rapid City, WDAF-TV (FOX) Kansas City, and KCTV (CBS) Kansas City. She was the first field producer for WXIN in Indianapolis, with the launch of the FOX59 Morning Show.
Shelton's Ph.D will be conferred in October 2010 from Salve Regina University. Her dissertation was entitled "Subtle Resistance to Nazi Hegemony in books and film." Shelton received her Masters Degree in Public Relations from Boston University, where she was a teaching assistant under Dr. Edward Downes. Her Bachelors Degree is from University of Central Missouri (formally Central Missouri State University).
