American Tradition Institute

American Tradition Institute (ATI)is a .
The organization represents itself as advocating Free-Market Environmentalism. ATI, like the Environmental Defense Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council, advocates through litigation. It joined in filing a lawsuit to gain access to email correspondence of a former professor held by the University of Virginia. The purpose of the law suit is to test whether the First Amendment offers protection from Freedom of Information Act inquiries in the form of academic freedom. In a second FOIA case, it successfully obtained the ethics records of a government employee who was receiving more than twice his annual salary in gifts and outside employment, finding that neither he nor his supervisors had properly followed federal ethics regulations. In another case, ATI filed against the state of Colorado, challenging its renewable energy standard on the basis that it violates the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The Director of the ATI Environmental Law Center is David W. Schnare, Esq. Ph.D., a scientist and attorney who spent 33 years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency writing rules and prosecuting enforcement cases on behalf of the public's interest in environmental protection.
