American School Band Directors Association

Formation
The American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) was formed in 1953 for the purpose of protecting a continuing and comprehensive program for the improvement of school band programs in the United States. The need for the ASBDA arose when the National High School Band Association had dissolved leaving school band programs without a national organization to advocate for their existence protect their interests. The organizing committee of the ASBDA consisted of three members: Loius M. Blaha of Cicero, Illinois, Captain James C. Harper of Lenoir, North Carolina, and Dale C. Harris of Pontiac, Michigan. With a pledge of support from Dr. Edwin Franko Goldman and Dr. Austin A. Harding of the American Bandmasters Association (ABA), a national convention was held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the purpose of forming the ASBDA. Fifty-Nine Charter Members from fourteen states adopted a constitution and bylaws, thereby bringing the organization into being.
