Altha Public School, located in Calhoun County Florida http://en. .org/wiki/Altha,_Florida ] is a Pre Kindergarten-12th grade School that has been the central educational landmark for this small rural town since the early 1900s. Today the school is flourishing with a total population of students numbering close to 1000. In a town with so many farm raised and hardworking people, plenty of athletes make themselves known. The sports that are played are Baseball( middle-highschool), volleyball( middle-highschool), softball ( middle-highschool), basketball ( middle-highschool),and weightlifting ( middle-highschool). All of these sports have seen highlights in several years with baseball going to state and districts several times as well as volleyball. None however reign higher in overall achievments as Altha's weightlifting team. With several state champions and record breakers emerging in the last couple years( 2005-2008 ) The record breakers include John H Alday who won the 2006 championship as a junior in the 119lbs weightclass with a bench-press of 215 and clean and jerk of 215 giving him a combined total of 430lbs. He won again in 2007 as a senior in the 129lbs weightclass with a bench-press of 260 and a clean and jerk of 225 giving him a combines total of 485lbs. The same year another state champion arose James ( Michael ) Mills who lifted in the 169lbs weightclass with a bench-press of 325 and a clean and jerk of 305 giving him a combines total of 630lbs, although acused of using performace enhancing drugs a formal investigation was never performed and accusations were never made public. The following year a unheard of second pair of state champions arose both of wich broke state records. The first was Monte R Tatum a senior who lifted in the 139lbs weightclass with a bench-press of 305 and a clean and jerk of 245 giving him a combined total of 550lbs, ( the benchpress broke the previous state record of 295 set by Greg Clent of South Walton Beach Highschool in 1997 ). The Second was Gary C Chew also a senior competeting in the 129lbs weightclass with a bench-press of 245 and a clean and jerk of 295 giving him a combines total of 540lbs ( the clean and jerk broke the previous state record of 280 set by James Phillips of Arnold High school in 2001 ).
