Allena Hansen b. 1951, Santa Monica, CA. USA. Central California rancher/writer who fought off attack of a predatory Black Bear in the summer of 2008. Although partially blinded and severely mauled, she hiked through rugged terrain back to her vehicle, then drove herself down a rutted mountain logging road to a fire station from which she was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center. There a team headed by Kimberley J. Lee, M.D., performed a grueling 7-hour emergency surgery that saved her life. Hansen has documented her ordeal and ongoing recovery in the media and in public appearances in an effort to encourage people in dire circumstances not to give up, to keep their wits and humor about them, and to take heart in their small successes. Most recently, she has become a national advocate for health care reform using her own experience with Blue Cross of California as a cautionary example.
