T. V. Show Ratings
TV-Y: All Children (This program is designed to be suitable for everyone; and it is not designed or expected to frighten.)
TV-Y7: Directed to Older Children (This program is designed to be suitable for ages 7 and up; and it contains mild fantasy or comedic violence; but this is not why children 6 & down shouldn't watch it; this is why children 6 & down; it could frighten them.)
TV-Y7 FV: Directed to Older Children - Fantasy Violence (This program is designed to be suitable for ages seven and up; and it may contain some fantasy violence; but more combative than TV-Y7 programs; but like we said; this is not why children 6 & down shouldn't watch it; this is why children 6 & down; it could frighten them.
TV-G: General Audience (This program is designed to be suitable for everyone; and it contains no / little violence; no / little strong language; no / little sexual dialogue; or no / little situations.)
TV-PG: Parental Guidance Suggested (This program is designed for parents giving parental guidance; and they may want it for children 7 and up; and it possibly contains some suggested dialogue; infrequent coarse language; some sexual situations; or some moderate violence.)
TV-14: Parents Strongly Cautioned (This program is designed to be suitable for ages 14 and up; and it possibly contains intensely suggested dialogue; strong coarse language; or intense sexual situations.)
TV-MA: Mature Audience Only (This program is designed to be suitable for ages 17 and up; but best suited for adults; and possibly contains crude indecent language; explicit sexual activity; or graphic violence.)
Movie (Film) Ratings
G: General Audiences (This program is designed to be appropriate for everyone; and this film indicates a film contains nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children.)
PG: Parental Guidance Suggested (This program is designed for parents giving parental guidance; and they may want it for children 7 and up; because this film may contain some material parents might not like for their really young children.
PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned (This program is designed to be appropriate for ages 13 and up; and it may contain violence; nudity; sensuality; language; adult activities; or other elements beyond a PG rating; and definitely beyond a G rating; but doesn't reach the restricted R category.)
R: Restricted (This program is designed to be appropriate for ages 17 and up; but best suited for adults; because it is specifically designed to be viewed by them.)
NC-17: Clearly Adult (This program is designed to be appropriate for adults only (ages 18 and up); because it's applied to films the MPAA believes most parents will consider inappropriate for children 17 and under; because it indicates only the adult content is more intense than an R rated movie; so NC-17 rated movies are more intense than R rated movies.)
Exempt Ratings
If a T. V. show or movie doesn't have a rating; it can be for the following:
T. V. Show Exempt Ratings
• Television advertising isn't rated and can't be blocked.
• News and sports are exempt from the T. V. show ratings system and may be considered unrated.
• Religious and home shopping programs also don't generally carry a rating.
Movie (Film) Exempt Ratings
• Older films with content pre-dating MPAA ratings are considered to be more PG in nature.
• If it is not submitted to the MPAA to be a rated movie.
• If an uncut version of a movie was submitted to the MPAA, the labels NR (Not Rated) and UR (Unrated) are often used.
T. V. Show Ratings: (Standings)
D: Sexual; or Suggestive Dialogue (Rarely used with the TV-MA rating)
L. Infrequent; Strong; Crude; Coarse; or Indecent Language
S: Sexual; or Suggestive Situations; or Content
V: Violence
FV: Fantasy Violence (Exclusive to the TV-Y7 rating)
