Aladna

An Aladna (also called a Mandon or Nyolin) is a nylon-strung mandolin of bowlback design from the United Kingdom. Like a normal mandolin, it has 4 double courses of strings, but unlike a mandolin, they are nylon and the lowest course is tuned in octaves. The lower string tension also allows many different tunings. The sound has been described as a cross between a mandolin, lute and a charango. It has also been compared to late medieval mandolins that had gut strings. It may have also descended from the Portuguese guitar, as the Portuguese word for lute is alaúde.
