Airstrikes in Iraq and Syria

Since August 2014, multiple airstrikes have been conducted by the US-led coalition states (US, UK, France, Netherlands) in Iraq and Syria. The strikes started during the administration of Barack Obama and extended in presidency of Donald Trump. There have been a total of 14,352 coalition strikes in Iraq and 16,691 in Syria with many civilian casualties. The coalition, dropped over 20,000 bombs on Raqqa. 80% of the city was declared uninhabitable by the UN, and 1,800 civilians are thought to have been killed. Timeline 2014 * August 2014: A total of 211 US-conducted airstrikes in Mosul Dam, Irbil, Sinjar and Amirli in Iraq. * September 2014: A total of 763 airstrikes conducted in Iraq and Syria. Claimed civilian casualties from coalition actions continued to mount, with a number of incidents reported across Iraq and Syria. * October 2014: The coalition air forces continued to intensify, with more than 400 airstrikes reported across both Iraq and Syria- in which more than 1,600 munitions were dropped. * November 2014: The coalition dropped 1,407 munitions on Iraq and Syria in 358 reported airstrikes. Canada became the final country to join the coalition in Iraq. More than 60 non-combatants were claimed killed in up to 18 incidents across Iraq and Syria. * December 2014: More than 460 airstrikes targeted Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria, with 1,867 bombs and missiles dropped. More than 50 civilians died in a single incident in Syria on December 28th 2015 * January 2015: The month witnessed the most intense coalition bombing yet, with more than 620 strikes releasing 2,308 weapons across Syria and Iraq. * February 2015: 1756 airstrikes were launched in Iraq and Syria by coalition group. Western allies of the US in Iraq were now carrying out 30-40% of all strikes. * March 2015: 1600 munitions dropped by coaltion in areas of Kobani, Mosul, Ramadi, Rawah, Sinjar and Tal Afah. At the beginning of March, the Iraqi government announced that they would soon launch a military operation with the Kurdish Peshmerga and other allies to regain the city of Mosul, which was under ISIL control since 10 June 2014.
