Abongo Obama

Abongo (Roy) Obama is the half-brother of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He is one of four children of Obama's father, Barack Obama, Sr. with is first wife, Kezia.

In his book Dreams From My Father, Barack Obama describes his older brother's initial adoption of, and later departure from his father's hard-drinking ways, as well as other vices such as smoking and the eating of pork. He would also embrace Islam and start using his Luo first name as a sign of identification with his African heritage.

"Abongo's new lifestyle has left him lean and clear-eyed, and at the wedding, he looked so dignified in his black African gown with white trim and matching cap that some of our guests mistook him for my father," Obama wrote. Abongo also argued that the black man must "liberate himself from the poisoning influences of European culture," according to his younger half-brother, "But the magic of his laughter remains, and we can disagree without rancor."
