A-talk

A-Talk is a server based Instant Messenger (IM).

At the moment, users can enter into the iGoogle Applications for A-Talk. This will allow users to have their own e-mail address with A-Talk, as well as their own personalized iGoogle page.

Client

A-Talk is currently in version 1.0.3 and is now in beta version 2.

A-Talk has many functions and more and more are being added, some of these are listed below.

Registering

To use A-Talk, the user must first register via the client. All that is needed is a preferred username, password, nickname and a current e-mail address. All of this information is sent to the server for verification and then will allow one to log on. All personal information is stored securely on a database located with the server.

Customization

Users can customize the way that A-Talk looks by changing background. They can choose from colours such as blue, black & red, orange, purple and green.

Hiding to tray

Another function of A-Talk is its ability to hide in the system tray. This allows users to hide the program from other people either walking past or watching them.

Chat Rooms

As well as talking with just one friend as with other instant messengers, users can also talk with many friends in a Chat Room. Users can do all of the things possible in a typical instant messenger window, but also talk to many users at once.

Users can also create chat rooms for themselves and other users, although the user will need to know the password to create a room or the server administrator will need to authorize the creation of it.

Chat rooms can now be locked. When a room is created, the user can choose a password for that room to have, then only users that know the password can enter that room

Saving Logs

A-Talk has the ability to save any chats in logs. The user is able to chose whether they want to save these as plain text files, or Rich Text Format.

Smilies

In chat rooms and single user talking, one can use smilies. So far, there are the common smile, sad, cry, tongue, big grin, tears etc. More will be added in later versions to come.

Beta
The next release (v2) will be released Thursday 22nd May 2008. The server will also be released to the public at this time. Version 2 will allow users to talk to anyone on the server without entering rooms.

Updater

Updater is a small program that comes with the A-Talk client. It allows one to check whether the most up-to-date version of the client is installed. If it is not, then Updater will download and update it.

The major goal of A-talk is to allow one to create their own server and run it for free. The server for A-Talk is also in beta (B48). The server is expected to be released at the same time as version 2 of the client. The server will be downloadable for certain users, with request, and allow them to host there own server for either their work, college, school university etc.
