42nd Canadian federal election
|
The 42nd Canadian federal election is tentatively scheduled for October 19, 2015, under the Canada Elections Act. However, it may be held sooner in the event that a motion of no-confidence passes. The tentative date for this election was established once Prime Minister Stephen Harper asked for, and Governor General David Johnston issued, writs of election on March 26, 2011. This established the date for the 41st Canadian federal election as May 2, 2011. A Canadian federal election must be held, barring earlier action by the Governor General, on the third Monday in October of the fourth calendar year following the last federal election. This thereby establishes the tentative date for the 42nd Canadian federal election as October 19, 2015. The House of Commons of Canada currently has 308 seats; however this may change following the redistribution as a result of the 2011 decennial Census. In the event that the election is held before February 8, 2012, or before a new Representation Order Proclamation comes into effect, the current composition of 308 seats will remain in effect.
