3XX

3XX 1161 AM "Radio 1611am") was a broadcasting station in Melbourne, Australia.

3XX 1611 AM was on the top end of the AM dial. Transmission is from Hoppers Crossing on frequency 1611 kHz, with a format of predominantly music from the 1980s and 1990s.

The station was taken off air on the 21st August 2008 due to the lapse of their broadcasting licence.

History

3XX (Radio 1611am) was established in late 2002. The station's studios were set up in a small office in the south of Melbourne, intended as only a "short stay" arrangement, which for various reasons turned into a longer stay than expected. The station was intended to be established as a Western Suburbs station, and talks have been in train with view to move to a new location in Footscray (Western Melbourne).

The first song broadcast by the radio station was "The Boys are Back in Town" by 70's rock band Thin Lizzy. This reflected the station's heritage and former association of the station founder with the now defunct former test station City FM.

3XX gained its popularity through broadcasting a mix of 80s and 90s hits and dance music, mixed with new tracks from the pop/dance/top 40 genre. Since commencement, 3XX has has a number of presenters move to other community and commercial radio stations in various capacities. The station has also presented various training programs and has strongly encouraged people with an interest in developing their radio talent to participate.

3XX grew in popularity since its inception. Being an AM broadcaster on the end of the dial, there is not the same pace of audience or advertiser take-up that would be present if the station was operating as an FM service, however the popularity of the station was on the rise. This was in part due to the various feature programs and the various sports broadcasts presented by the station in recent times.

In the time since inception, 3XX has diverged from the original idea of solely being a "retro" music radio station to include a greater variety of programming. This program mix includes sport, special features, technology, disco classics and its well publicised format of "More 80s & More 90s".
