Visit
Arrival in the United States
After visiting France, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC, United States of America, at 6:00 PM Eastern Time Zone (EST) on the evening of February 12, 2025. He was welcomed at the Joint Base Andrews by India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other officials. Many members of the Indian diaspora in United States of America were also there.
Meeting with Donald Trump
On February 13, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House. He was the fourth foreign leader to visit Donald Trump since his return to the White House in January 2025. During the meeting, the two leaders covered a range of topics including defense, trade deals, visas, and immigration. In the meeting, both leaders set a new target named “Mission 500” to increase bilateral trade between India and the United States to $500 billion by 2030. India's Prime Minister discussed an energy deal with US President Trump announcing that New Delhi would import more US oil and gas to make the trade deficit less between the two countries. Donald Trump said “They’re going to be purchasing a lot of our oil and gas they need it and we have it,”. Donald Trump and Narendra Modi said they would sign a new 10-year framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership in the 21st Century this year. Regarding the deportation of illegal Indian migrants, Prime Minister Modi said, “if Indians are living in the US illegally, India is ready to take them back”.
Significance
The meeting occurred several weeks before President Trump's announcement on global tariffs, and resulted in speculation on whether India would be exempt from reciprocal tariffs. On April 9, President Trump announced a 26% tariff on Indian goods exported into the US. As of May 2025, both countries continue to negotiate a trade deal in line with the bilateral trade pact discussed during Modi's visit to the US in February.
