The 2025 NJ Transit strike is a strike by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen against NJ Transit that started on May 16, 2025. It involves about 450 locomotive engineers and is the first transit strike in New Jersey in over 40 years. The entire NJ Transit network was suspended at 12:01 AM on May 16, 2025, including the Metro-North Pascack Valley Line and Port Jervis Line which are operated by NJ Transit. Both side say they were close to coming to agreement before the work-stoppage started. Contingency plans NJ Transit informed commuters to utilize its bus network and annouced chartered buses to serve four park and ride lots. Tickets would be cross honored across these alternatives, although alternatives operated by other agencies like Amtrak, PATH, and ferries would not. The MTA annouced plans to cross honor West of Hudson customers on the Pascack Valley Line and Port Jervis Line on the Hudson and Harlem lines. In addition to allowing free ferry and bus connections across the Hudson River.
