On 8 November 2024, two Village Defence Guards (VDGs), identified as Kuldeep Kumar and Nazir Ahmed, were killed by militants in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir. The Kashmir Tigers militant group claimed responsibility for the killings. The bodies of the victims were recovered from forested areas in Ohli Kuntwara. Following the discovery, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) was launched to locate the perpetrators. Continued Gunfight On 10 November 2024, based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of the suspected militant group, a joint operation was initiated in the Bhart Ridge area of Kishtwar. During the encounter, three Indian Army paratroopers were injured as the firefight continued. The group involved in the operation was believed to be the same militants who had abducted and killed the VDGs. The encounter received widespread condemnation from officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who expressed condolences and vowed action against militant activities. Reactions Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, stating, "No words are strong enough to condemn the heinous terrorist attack on VDG members in Kishtwar. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the brave sons martyred in this cowardly attack. We are firmly resolved to destroy all terror outfits & avenge this barbaric act." Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and leaders from the Congress and BJP also expressed their condolences and called for swift action against the militants.
