The .585 Hubel Express, also known as the 585 HE is a hunting and big bore target cartridge designed to fit the commercially available long-action firearms, such as the Savage long action, the Ruger Magnum action, the Stiller and Lawton actions, the P14/M17 Enfield actions, the CZ 550 action, and the Montana Rifle Company "Professional Hunter" action. It will also fit Ruger No. 1 and FBW falling block actions. Design The .585 Hubel Express was designed in the late 90s, and the first test barrel was setup in 2004, in a test fixture. The first gun setup in 2006 was P-14 Enfield, second was a Ruger 77, third, fourth Enfield, fifth OlyArms BBK, sixth a NEF SB2, seventh Montana Rifle Co PH, and more. The case is based on long .585 Nyati Basic brass cases, with a belt added for headspacing and rim set to fit the .505 Gibbs bolt face. It uses a number 31 RCBS shell holder while reloading. It was intended to be as powerful as other magnum 577/600 cartridges in a case that was reloadable many times. Hence its straight sided belted design, with a longer case of long, that holds of water. This design with its diameter allows it to work in bolt actions that are of the 505 Gibbs size. See picture in the box.And also allows easy use in Ruger #1 and FBW Model S, as it fits the feed trough on the actions. Reloading Die sets are made by CH4D. Reamers are made by Manson Reamers. Performance The .585 Hubel Express fires a hunting and target load using a bullet. Recoil in light rifles ( or less) is heavy, but heavier guns of with thick recoil pads make the recoil more comfortable. Recoil in those guns kept in the lighter mode, for easier carrying, can be moderated by muzzle brakes or barrel porting. As a hunting cartridge the .585 Hubel Express is suitable for big game; with heavier constructed full jacket bullets, like Asquare Monolith going on to the soft bullets like Asquare soft Lion Load bullets. For lighter, thin-skinned game, a spire pointed, soft point will work, and can be useful at longer ranges due to better ballistic co-efficient.
